The Georgetown Advantage

Our Commitment to Patients

Georgetown University Hospital's Bone Marrow Transplant Program is part of the highly respected Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a modern, patient-focused facility situated on our campus.

We have a team of experts to handle patient care.

Georgetown has assembled some of the nation's top bone marrow transplant specialists. Our medical director has more than 13 years experience and has completed more than 1,000 bone marrow transplants in patients of all diagnoses, with results that exceed national norms. He works in collaboration with a team of skilled and caring oncologists, supported by all the specialists necessary to manage every aspect of the transplantation process.

Our bone marrow transplant coordinators work closely with patients and families every step of the way. Coordinators serve as the lifeline to each patient and family, coordinating care and providing ongoing support. They help find the best donor match for donor transplants. Specially trained bone marrow transplant nurses, psychologists, social workers, nutritionists and physical therapists also are active in patient care.

We offer every kind of bone marrow transplant service.

We provide the DC area's most complete array of transplant options to meet the needs of every patient. We offer advanced standard treatments and access to the most promising research studies when appropriate. Our goal is to give each patient the therapy they need, with the best chance of success.

Our services include:

  • Autologous and allogeneic transplants
  • On-site testing of related donors
  • Coordination with National and International Marrow Donor Program registries to identify unrelated donors
  • Bone marrow harvesting and peripheral blood stem cell collection
  • Individualized treatment plans with intensive chemotherapy, total body irradiation, lower-dose options
  • Access to clinical research trials
  • Intensive monitoring following treatment
  • Coordination with specialists to manage complications

We have comfortable, convenient facilities.

Georgetown University Hospital has an 18-bed bone marrow transplant

unit in the main hospital. The unit features private rooms specially equipped to minimize the chance of infection, along with flexible visiting hours to encourage family participation throughout the transplant process.

The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and other hospital services are nearby on the hospital campus. The hospital is situated in a pleasant, residential part of Georgetown, with on-site parking and access to public transportation. Our staff helps coordinate temporary housing for out-of-town patients and families.
