Office of Continuing Medical Education

Purpose
The mission of the Georgetown University Hospital Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) is to create a measurable enhancement of the knowledge and clinical skills of physicians and other healthcare professionals through the development of pertinent, high quality continuing professional education activities.

The goals of the OCPE are to:

  • Identify educational needs of physicians and other healthcare professionals by integrating the strategic planning goals of the Hospital and formal needs assessments of target audiences
  • Present new research based skills and clinical concepts that contribute to improved patient outcomes locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Develop and evaluate new educational modalities that enhance the OCPE’s ability to deliver research based knowledge utilizing new interactive technologies
  • Meet or exceed the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education ( ACCME) and the guidelines of the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award ( AMA PRA).

Content Areas
The OCPE offers a balance of primary care and specialty topics designed to meet the educational needs of the target audience.

Target Audience
The target audience of the Georgetown University Hospital OCPE programs includes local, national and international physicians and other health professionals with a priority placed on those professionals located in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.

Type of Activities
The Georgetown University Hospital OCPE coordinates conferences, workshops, regularly scheduled departmental conferences, lecture series, joint-sponsorship activities, and enduring materials in compliance with the Essential Area and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Expected Results
The result of the OCPE educational activities is to improve patient care by maintaining, developing, or increasing the skills, knowledge and professional performance of physicians and other healthcare professionals. The OCPE, in conjunction with the Committee on Continuing Medical Education, continually assesses the impact of its activities through quantitative and qualitative methods to ensure that the goals are met.

MedStar Georgetown Medical Center is recognized as an approved provider of continuing education for physicians and psychologists.
